Heavy Equipment Operator Job Description

Bauer Infrastructure is seeking a dependable and skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to support daily field operations across our underground utility projects. Our operations are based in Martell, NE, 15 miles southwest of Lincoln. The ideal candidate brings strong operating experience, a solid work ethic, and the ability to perform physical, fast‑paced tasks safely and efficiently. A successful Heavy Equipment Operator at Bauer performs precise excavation for water, sewer, and storm systems while working closely with the crew to maintain productivity, quality, and safety on every jobsite.

Heavy Equipment Operator Responsibilities:

Operate heavy equipment to load and unload materials and keep the work area safely secured.
Excavate trenches for new and existing utilities while following all safety requirements and coordinating with crew members.
Check slopes and grades using lasers, grade rods, or transit levels.
Confirm work meets specifications by monitoring grade stakes, material levels, and hand signals.
Assist with pipe alignment for water, storm, and sanitary sewer installations.
Grade and level trench bases using tampers and hand tools.
Connect pipes and seal joints using glue, cement, gaskets, or flanges.
Perform excavation tasks such as backfilling, compacting, and breaking concrete or rock.
Cover and protect installed utilities using equipment and hand tools with soil and aggregates.
Complete daily equipment inspections, including fluid checks and lubrication.
Report equipment repair or maintenance needs to the foreman or shop staff.
Identify utilities in the trench or bore path and excavate around them safely and precisely.
Place and remove trench boxes according to company safety procedures.

Heavy Equipment Operator Requirements:

Work well independently and as part of a team.
Strong problem-solving skills in field and equipment related situations.
Communicate clearly with crew members and supervisors.
Consistent focus and efficiency throughout daily tasks and changing jobsite conditions.
Physical endurance and the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Ability to stand, bend, and kneel for extended period.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Other duties, as assigned.
